At the Inn at the Oaks we introduce almost every guest to First Encounter Beach and the beautiful sunsets. I’m not sure how many of our guests understand the history of First Encounter Beach or realize whose footsteps they are following.
The Pilgrims landed right where you are standing and enjoyed the same sunset you did at First Encounter Beach in Eastham.
Almost a month after their arrival in Provincetown and their explorations of Truro the Pilgrims finally made it to Eastham. They sailed down the inside of the Outer Cape and decided to pop ashore at First Encounter Beach. As the name would suggest, this is where they had their first encounter with the native tribe. The Nauset tribe of the Wampanoags. A previous encounter with other European Settlers did not go well for the Nauset tribe so they were not terribly welcoming to the Pilgrims. After a few musket shots and arrows the Pilgrims left First Encounter Beach and 8 days later sailed across Cape Cod Bay to Plymouth.
I’d like to think the current natives are a little more welcoming, especially here at the Inn at the Oaks.
Join us on the Weekend of December 8, 9 or 10th – If you know how many passengers landed in Provincetown that will be your rate per night….
